Abstract
This paper reports on the development and first experimental results of a 175 GHz long-pulse megawatt gyrotron for electron cyclotron resonance heating (ECRH). The device was designed and tested at the Institute of Applied Electronics (IAE), China Academy of Engineering Physics (CAEP). Within the available 1.2 MW test-stand limit, systematic parameter commissioning and conditioning enabled the gyrotron to deliver 506 kW of output power in 100-s continuous pulses, with an overall efficiency of 46 %. These results validate the key aspects of the physical design. This represents the first demonstration in China of 500-kW-level, hundred-second gyrotron operation for ECRH applications.
